Hotel de la Cité is one of the few hotels actually within the walls of the mediaeval city of Carcassonne. This is always a huge hit with any kids who indulge fairy-tale fantasies, and means that you can explore the traffic-free Cité in relative calm before and after the crowds who tend to arrive during the middle of the day, a magical experience in itself. One of the family rooms leads off from a narrow 13th-century tower; it is neo-gothic in style and has two children’s beds on a mezzanine floor. The hotel also has a villa made up of three guestrooms and a patio – ideal for larger family parties.

The hotel’s restaurant La Barbacane is the only Michelin-starred restaurant in the city serving traditional French food with a modern twist. The library bar serves fabulous cocktails, which can be enjoyed in the garden during warmer months. Massages and other treatments can be arranged either in your room or in the calming massage room.
