Large is size but intimate in feel, the Fairmont Mayakoba in Playa del Carmen offers a spoiling combination of lagoon, beach or jungle setting

A resort but intimate in feel, the Fairmont Mayakoba is a 401-roomed beauty perches on the edge of the sea and encompasses dunes, water canals, tropical forest and dense mangroves so it’s unique, lush and ripe for exploration (or relaxation depending on what you’re after). Not far from bustling Playa del Carmen, most rooms are extremely tranquil with either lagoon, jungle or ocean views and this is also home to the El Camaleón golf Course, home of Mexico’s only PGA Tour course.

For You -

Aside from uber-luxurious accommodation (the bathrooms are apartment-sized), there is the Willow Stream Spa. Set within the jungle on the lagoon-edge, its very location makes one insta-relax and treatments can be enjoyed on private balconies. If you want more of a kick-start, the Fairmont Mayakoba hosts “Bootcamp to Happiness” weekends every year. Run by the founder of the Mexican Yoga Institute, Ana Paula Dominguez, this is a seminar designed to makeover your life, both inside and out. Food-wise, this is a good choice too. Home to Las Brisas and El Puerto, you can enjoy local catch such as Caribbean lobster (all sustainable we are assured,) while those wanting something more informal can opt for the European Café Maya.

For Them +

Three hours of complimentary daily use of the kids’ camp for 4 to 12 year olds, which has been beautifully designed to look like a tree house. All little ones are greeted by a famous Mayan character, Zamna, who welcomes children into his “house”, found within in the “Mayan forest” located inside the Discovery Club. Activities include learning Mayan words, baking, recycling and “Fairmont Fit for Kids” sports. There are excellent facilities for teenagers too. Every summer the “100 Days of Summer” occurs, which has activities for children including camping and stargazing and the very-popular “frogtastic adventure:” By lantern-light, families are taken on guided walks at night through the magical Mayan jungle around the hotel on a hunt for local-wildlife. There is accommodation for nannies if they travel with you, otherwise the family rooms are interconnecting and the hotel can happily provide cots and babysitting facilities.
